Professional versus DIY
Building your site
To generate business you need a smart, up to date and reliable website. The cheapest option is definitely to build your own website. If you have the skills and time to do this, then DIY is a defiinitely great choice for you. If not, then taking the DIY route means investing considerable time learning a new skill. The quality of the outcome is entirely dependent on how easy you find this and how much time you are actually able to devote to the task.
Maintaining your site
Once the website is built, it needs maintaining and the content needs updating regularly. DIY gives maximum flexibility and speed. The potential down side is that it may take more of your time than you think. Adding new content may change what is already there. If you worked for hours to achieve a really nice page layout, adding one new paragraph could mean you have to go back and re-design that page. If you haven’t done anything to the site for a while, it may take some time to remember how you did it before.
The best of both worlds?
A good compromise might be to hire a professional to create a high quality site with some discrete elements that can be easily updated by the professional or by you without affecting the rest of the site. Result: a high quality showcase for your brand; minimal investment of your time in learning a skill which is not core to your business; ongoing flexibility for keeping the site current.
